| Maria Parr - Artist Biography |
|---|
Maria was born in the Hutt Valley and educated at St Mary's College in Wellington where Art became her highest achievement in School Certificate. A considerable amount of time was subsequently divided between raising a family and a career in the banking industry.
Art and crafting had always been of interest to her as her mother was a sculptural and loom weaver, often dabbling in other art and craft mediums. She has always had a passion for art forms trying many different craft mediums i.e.: pottery, mosaics, hypertufa pots, fabric boxes etc which unleashed her creative side. It wasn't until she moved to the Wairarapa in 2003 and undertook tuition in painting with oils and watercolour that her niche was discovered. Since that time she has developed skills in several mediums with landscapes from the Wairarapa featuring in her work. More recently her paintings have had a somewhat whimsical feel to them trying to express a joyous feeling of total abandon - the young girl inside all of us!
